On May 26, Jerry Berggren was invited to attend the Dawes County Board of Commissioners meeting in Chadron, Nebraska.
The County’s current security efforts stem from the 2023 NIRMA Security Assessment. While the report recognized the courthouse’s strong record of care and maintenance, it also identified opportunities to strengthen safety measures in response to evolving public needs.
After reviewing the report, he was impressed by both the thoroughness of the assessment and the County’s commitment to implementing its recommendations.
During the meeting, the Commissioners approved upgrades to the courthouse security system, including new 360-degree security cameras and enhanced emergency alarm buttons capable of identifying the precise location of an emergency.
Later on the agenda, Darren Duncan, Chief Probation Officer for District 12, gave a presentation regarding courthouse probation services.
While the current office space functions adequately, discussions focused on opportunities to improve privacy and public safety.
One recommendation included the addition of a secure private restroom to better accommodate required drug testing procedures and protect both clients and the public. A courthouse tour following the meeting highlighted several additional concerns identified in the 2023 Security Assessment.
One included the placement of the District Courtroom metal detector to better assist operators with current concerns and circulation challenges near the courtroom entrance. While short-term adjustments were discussed, a long-term solution may involve consolidating public access into a single secured courthouse entrance.
Additional concerns discussed included the remote location of the jury deliberation room and the restricted circulation paths deputies must navigate during emergency situations.
Looking ahead, residents are encouraged to share their ideas and feedback, as public input will help guide future decisions regarding this publicly owned space.
Future planning may include office relocations, expansion considerations, accessibility improvements, enhanced records storage, and additional public safety measures. Community involvement will play an important role as Dawes County works to ensure the courthouse continues to meet the needs of the public.
Berggren Architects remains committed to working alongside the Dawes County Commissioners to support thoughtful, practical solutions that improve both safety and functionality while respecting the historic character of the courthouse.
