Bell Residence (Ernest A. Calling House)
Scope of Work
Design Schematics for Building Addition
Berggren Architects provided plans for an addition to the house.
History
Ernest A. Calling House circa 1907
Designed by L. J. Anderson
Completion
This project was completed in 2018.
The Challenge
The current residents (Mr. & Mrs. Bell) invited Berggren Architects to submit a proposal for services regarding the expansion of the home providing approximately 1,000 square feet of new living space. The goal of this expansion was to provide ample space for the growth of the Bell family making it a family-oriented project.
The Strategy
Additions for the Bell Residence would include a larger first floor bath with a shower with the existing first floor bath to become a guest bathroom. The master bedroom would then be relocated from the historic library to the addition’s first floor. The washer and dryer are to be relocated on the first floor.
Several other spaces within the existing house needed to be renovated. The existing kitchen will be expanded to provide ample eating space. The screes surrounding the front porch are to be removed and rail & spindles shall be installed. Storm windows will be modified or replaced to improve access for cleaning and other maintenance. The primary concern is to create an addition with the appearance as if it had existed from the beginning.
The Results
The Bell residents went with Berggren Architects proposal and design schematics. The residents then proceeded with contracting part of the work and then completing the rest by themselves making it a DIY project. The project was completed in 2018.
