The Challenge
Berggren Architects was first retained by Box Butte County in 2014 to complete a master plan for renovating their county courthouse. The plan included multiple issues and priorities, one of them being the replacement of the existing elevator. The goal was to replace the original cable elevator and equipment with a new hydraulic elevator that is ADA compliant. This required expanding the elevator shaft to the north and to the east. The extra size would encroach into the existing men’s restroom and public spaces. There would also be associated mechanical and electrical work.
The Strategy
We knew that this project would include surprises as we began to open walls and interfere with existing structural, finish, mechanical, and electrical work. As such we planned to have changes embedded into the project schedule. Additional renovations of nearby public and office spaces have been added to the scope of the project.
The adjacent men’s restroom is redesigned to fit around the new shaft. Marble wainscot is being removed on existing walls while new fire-rated walls are built out for the marble to be reattached to.
The Results
The project is currently under construction.
