Cheyenne Fountain Restoration
Scope of Work
Berggren Architects assisted in the restoration of the Cheyenne Airport Fountain.
Location
Cheyenne, WY
History
The structure was constructed in 1925 and was designed by the Denver Terra-Cotta Company.
Completion
This project was completed in 2022.
The Challenge
The waterproofing within the original fountain was messy and had spilled over into the lower bowl on the old existing tile. Waterproofing also onto the terra-cotta of the structure. The terra-cotta was also broken within some spots. There were some sort of supposed algae growing on exposed terra-cotta. There was also what seemed to be a make-shift drainage hold to the lower bowl of the fountain.
The Strategy
To meet budget constraints, Berggren Architects agreed to the project being completed in multiple phases. Phase one was to be the restoration of the fountain bowls to be watertight, as well as the restoration of its plumbing and lighting system. Phase one was completed in 2020.
The city of Cheyenne then went on to raise funds to intiate phase two which was restoring the terra-cotta mansonry. Berggren Architects assisted with finding a similar stone but after, stepped out due to the expenses of being present in Cheyenne.
The Results
The fountain is now complete and fully functional at the Cheyenne Airport in Wyoming. The fountain was rededicated with a ceremony on September 9th, 2023. Jerry Berggren, from Berggren Architects, attended the rededication ceremony to honor the symbolism that the Airport Fountain holds.
