CAP Assessment

Shelby County Historical Museum

In 2014, Berggren Architects and objects conservator Julie Reilly performed a Collections Assessment for Preservation (CAP) for the Shelby County Historical Museum in Harlan, Iowa. The Shelby County Historical Museum collection is housed in two museum buildings and two log cabins and includes objects significant to the heritage of the county and state. These objects provide an essential resource for research and education. The museum hosts a unique collection of log cabins and annually celebrates their role in the development of Shelby County.

Some of the recommendations in our report included restoring all the windows of the log cabins, screening collection materials for arsenic, and reducing excessive visible light levels.
