CAP Assessment

South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum

In 2018, Berggren Architects and conservator Clara Deck performed a Collections Assessment for Preservation (CAP) for the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum, located on the campus of South Dakota State University. The museum comprises four buildings: a Quonset building, a rammed earth building, a large pole barn, and the Livestock Judging Pavilion. The pavilion is the main historic structure and was retrofitted as a museum in 1976. The museum collection focuses on South Dakotan agriculture, spanning from the beginning of domestication in the South Dakota area to the present day.

In our report, Berggren Architects made many recommendations.. These include the restoration of the clay tile Pavilion roof, the examination of the plywood walls of the Quonset building for any mold to be removed, and the elimination of potential water access points around the foundation of the Pavilion.
