Wyoming State Capitol

Scope of Work
Consulting
Berggren Architects provided historic preservation consulting to HDR Denver for their restoration of the state capitol.

Location
Cheyenne, WY

History
Designed by David W. Gibbs and Company

Completion
This project was completed in 2019.
The Challenge
In 2016, our client, HDR-Denver contacted Berggren Architects, considering our firm as their preservation consultants for their 110-million-dollar restoration project of the historic Wyoming State Capitol. The preservation/restoration design work had been completed by another firm which was unable to provide on-site observation during construction. Our client’s responsibility was construction management of this project simultaneously with the 200-million-dollar renovation of two administrative buildings and the central heating and air conditioning plant. The on-going restoration work in the historic Capitol was uncovering critical questions daily. They needed a preservation architect on-site for the duration of this three-year long project.
The Strategy
Berggren Architects coordinated with HDR-Denver and within a month, one of our preservation architects, Mike Dixon, FAIA, moved to Cheyenne and was reporting daily to the construction site. In addition to his daily routine of addressing questions as they came up, Mike filed weekly Field Observation Reports. He attended the regular construction meetings offering input whenever appropriate. Although not required, Mike kept the Wyoming SHPO informed of the progress and occasionally lead them on tours of the project. Mike provided numerous, sometimes before and after, photographs of the project’s preservation issues. He routinely collected field measurement and provided drawings for the craftsmen to follow for installations and reconstruction of unique historic elements.
The Results
This award-winning project was completed on-time and on-budget. Re-dedication took place on Statehood Day, July 10th, 2019.
