The Challenge
Berggren Architects was tasked to bringing the women’s restrooms to the standard of the men’s as well as offering necessary preservation work to the 120-year-old men’s restrooms. The courthouse features both a men’s and women’s restroom on each floor, but only the men’s restrooms are original. The women’s restrooms were installed in the 1970s, and the restrooms were done to the style of the day, largely plastic. The men’s restrooms match the courthouse’s ornate interior-dark stained millwork, brass rails. Mosaic tile inlays, solid marble wainscot and stalls.
The Strategy
In the men’s restrooms, the marble will be carefully removed from the walls and repaired. The brass components will be disconnected and polished. New MEP will be channeled through the walls whereas currently it is expose. The layouts will be altered to make it more seamless for modern functionality.
For the women’s restrooms, there will be a complete demolition of the contents and finishes of the spaces. The aesthetics of the men’s restrooms influenced the design, implementing marble stalls, mosaic tile, and wood. Updated plumbing fixtures are modern but sympathetic to the historic character of the courthouse. Perimeter soffit has been added to the ceiling to house electrical and mechanical work. All restrooms were redesigned to meet ADA standards.
The sweeping update of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing in the restrooms will improve not just the functionality of the restrooms, but the visuals as well.
